Metal Additive Manufacturing Process Chain

KU Leuven

KU Leuven image1INTRODUCTION

Discover the process chain of metal additive manufacturing, starting from 3D model to post-processing in a hands-on workshop.

DESCRIPTION

In this hands-on course you will learn about the workflow of metal additive manufacturing. You will be guided through the various steps of Laser Powder Bed Fusion technology (LPBF) which is one of the most popular 3D printing technologies for producing industrial metal components. You will obtain hands-on practice in KU Leuven’s additive manufacturing lab where the following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to metal additive manufacturing
  • Preparation of 3D design files:
    • Assigning build parameters
    • Optimizing part orientation
    • Designing supports if needed
  • LPBF machine preparation
  • 3D printing process
  • Post-processes:
    • Wire EDM for part removal from the base plate
    • Support removal
    • Sand blasting
    • Microscopy.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course is designed for engineers, researchers, managers in the metal additive manufacturing sector, as well as for those who wish to understand and explore the workflow of a metal additive manufacturing process through a hands-on workshop in a metal additive manufacturing lab.
